In this episode of Thriving Dentist Show we address the very serious topic of how to prepare for medical emergencies in your practice. Research done at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio reveals that every practicing U.S. dentist will face approximately eight potentially life-threatening medical emergencies in their offices every 10 years. That means there will be approximately 150,000 dental medical emergencies in the U.S. every year. More and more dental emergencies are due to unanticipated interactions between sedation and the medications a patient is taking. According to the American Medical Association, in 2010 the average American between the ages of 35 and 50 was currently taking seven prescribed medications (an increase from four in 2002). We were very fortunate to have Dr. Catharine Goodson as a special guest on the Thriving Dentist Show. Dr. Goodson is an authority on how to prepare for medical emergencies and she has some very useful information to share with our listeners.

This is a topic that many Dentists don’t spend much time thinking about, yet proper preparation is absolutely critical.

If you are a regular listener of Thriving Dentist Show you may have listened to Show #31 with Dr. Dan Fischer as our guest who discussed the science of whitening. On this episode Gary shared some very specific techniques that will help you do more whitening in your practice. This is important because whitening helps patients take a greater interest in their teeth and often leads to more interest in restorative dentistry. That’s why Gary likes to make whitening a core element of your practice. By doing so you will be giving patients what they want and in turn, develop better patients in your practice. This show is designed to be very practical with information that you can immediately use in your office. You’ll also want to share this information with your team members since whitening is a team sport.

You talk about whitening as being a ‘Gateway Service’. What do you mean by that statement and why is whitening such a practice builder?

In your courses, you recommend 3 very specific things to do to grow the whitening component of any practice. What are those 3 techniques?

  1. Shade match
  2. Value Pricing
  3. Lifetime whitening

Share some tips you have learned to reduce sensitivity.

Any other whitening tips you would like to share with our listeners?

Like any business, a dental practice has capital needs throughout the life of the practitioner. At the beginning of their career a dentist will likely borrow money to either purchase or start a practice. At some point the dentist may want to purchase their facility and the practice will certainly have equipment needs throughout the lifetime of the Dentist. The equipment needs can range from minor investment in upgrades to significant investment in the latest technology. In the previous Thriving Dentist Show you heard Dr. Chris Haag talk about the benefits of his CAD-CAM technology and this requires a six-figure investment. Today we are very fortunate to have Bob Affleck as our special guest on the Thriving Dentist Show. Bob is the Vice President of the Southwest Division of Wells Fargo Practice Finance and has served the dental profession for over 25 years.

1. The banking business has changed quite a bit over the past few years. Are banks lending to dentists?

2.  For our young dentists listening to the show today what are some specific things they can do to prepare for purchasing a practice?

3.  Many of our listeners may be mid-career and looking to invest in equipment upgrades or significant equipment purchases such as a Cerec machine. Tell us about the lending products that meet these needs.

4.   Many Dentists today are equity rich, but cash poor. Tell us about some newer lending products that can help a Dentist use the equity they have in their practice.

If you have ever attended one of Gary’s courses you know that the concepts he teaches are drawn from his real world experience in his own practice in Phoenix, Arizona. Gary talks about what he has walked first. The entire purpose of the Thriving Dentist Show is to share information that will help you have a THRIVING practice and our interview today is another real-world example of someone who is thriving in a pretty unlikely place. Today we have a special guest on the show who considers himself just a regular dentist from Lincoln, Nebraska. Well friends, don’t let his modesty fool you! Dr. Chris Haag has managed to build a very successful practice in an average town by combining the concepts of high tech and high touch. His practice is state of the art but also emphasizes the old fashioned value of treating patients like family! This is a recipe that is working extremely well for Dr. Haag and can work for you as well.

We are huge fans of technology here on the Thriving Dentist Show and I love the way you have incorporated technology. But! the technology takes a back seat to the more human side of your practice when necessary. One of the headlines of a page on your website is; ‘A Dental Team Who Will Treat You Like Family’. I think this is very cool because that is precisely what people want and value today. I know our listeners are excited to hear exactly how you achieve that balance.
