The link between oral and general health has been something that those in the dental profession have known for quite some time now. The great news is that the general public is beginning to understand this connection! It is all over the popular media. Hardly a day goes by that there isn’t some major article in a magazine or a feature on the news. Just within the last year, Whoopi Goldberg has discussed the connection between oral and general health on The View, Diane Sawyer and Dr. Timothy Johnson had a feature on Good Morning America, ABC News has run syndicated features on the evening news, and Men’s Health has published articles about this in their magazine. This is all great news because the public is beginning to pay attention! On this episode we were very fortunate to have a special guest on the show who is a world-renowned authority on periodontal disease, Dr. Tom Nabors.
 
Research shows that perio disease is a silent epidemic in the world today. Some data indicates that 80% of the adult population has some degree of perio disease. Let me use more direct language. That means that it’s possible that 4 out of 5 people have an active infection in their mouth! And this infection is not just in their mouth, it’s throughout their circulatory system. While this may seem like bad news, the good news is that we have new science that can help our listeners diagnose and treat perio disease. We were very fortunate to have Dr. Nabors as our guest to share with you some of his passion for perio and how you can help your patients have great oral health and also improve their general health as well.

Leadership in the dental office is absolutely critical if you are going to have a THRIVING practice. The Dentist must be an effective leader but it is also true that each team member must also develop their leadership skills so that they can ‘lead’ patients to make good decisions regarding their oral health. Today we are very fortunate to have a special guest on the show that can help you become the leader that you are capable of becoming. Katherine Eitel is the creator of a very unique style of leadership that she has called, The Lioness Principle. This concept is unique because Katherine believes that everyone has the innate skills to become a leader and she uses the Lioness Principle to help people access their instinctive greatness and become the leader that they are capable of becoming.
 
Every successful business has accomplished leaders. Dentistry is no different! One of the main differences between a Thriving practice & a struggling practice is the presence of leadership. Yet, the truth is that most dentists have had zero leadership education or training and it is a topic that they would rather avoid. Katherine brings a wonderful perspective to this topic because she understands that everyone has ‘hidden or uncovered’ leadership skills within them just waiting to get out and she is a master at helping people develop their innate leadership skills. TDS013 : Your spit is awesome!

Gary learned many years ago that the hygiene department is the backbone of a successful dental practice! This is even more true today. The hygiene department is the primary point of contact for patients with the practice and a successful hygiene department will keep patients active and positively engaged with the office. Today, we are very fortunate to have Anastasia Turchetta as our special guest on the show! Anastasia has the unique ability to relate to with dental consumers as well as Dentists and Hygienists about Oral Health. This skill was developed from her 22+ years of experience in clinical hygiene. A couple of years ago she created her hugely popular videos on youtube called ‘Hump Day Happenings’ where she shares her passion for Oral Health with consumers.
 
One of the reasons why the hygiene department is so important today is because of the connection between oral and systemic health. Today we know that if a patient has gum disease they have a much higher risk of experiencing general health concerns such as heart disease, stroke and diabetes. The general media has tuned in to this topic as evidenced by Whoopi Goldberg talking about it on the View as well as much more general media coverage. Gary and Anastasia will share new information with our listeners today about this connection and why it is time to get serious about diagnosing and treating gum disease.
 
Why is dental hygiene so much more than just teeth cleaning? It involves so many other aspects of health, including oral cancer screening which is one of the most treatable forms of cancer when caught early.

This concept applies to the dental profession and on this episode we were very fortunate to have Ina Pockrass as a special guest on the Thriving Dentist Show.
