Is Your Vision Big Enough?

Great WallSome people believe that dentistry is a great job but a poor business.  Dentistry is fundamentally different from other businesses in that the success of the practice is largely dependent on the owner/Dentists production. For most Dentists, if you aren’t working you aren’t making an income. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Witness a client of mine from Idaho. He’s a young Dentist who understands business and has developed a business model of owning multiple practices. His story is an example of how dentistry can be a great business.

The Future of Dentistry is Very Bright!

Bright FutureRecently I had two experiences that cause me to believe that the future of the dental profession is very bright. Let me explain.

In August I was invited to speak at a conference in Provo, UT hosted by Dr. Gordon Christensen on the campus of BYU. The conference was a two-day event with a panel of amazing speakers combined with some social events for those attending. Dr. Christensen and his wife, Rella were the consummate hosts! Their kindness and thoughtfulness was evident in so many of the details. Dr. Christensen assigned a ‘Speaker Host’ to each of the speakers. My host contacted me ahead of the meeting to find out if there was anything he could do to make my visit more pleasant. He picked me up from the airport and served as my shuttle throughout my stay. My particular host was in his final year of undergraduate studies at BYU and about to apply to dental school. He sat next to me during the other speaker’s presentations and I noticed that he took copious notes. He told me that he took 10 pages of notes for my presentation! I asked him to keep in contact with me because this young man is precisely the type of person I will be hiring as an Associate Dentist in my practice!! It will be four years before he graduates from dental school, but I can confidently predict that this fellow will make his mark in the dental profession.

Are you ‘All In’?

All inPardon my enthusiasm………………but DENTISTRY ROCKS!!! Despite the reality of a weak economy, increasing third-party intrusion, and the challenges of controlling overhead, this is indeed an awesome time to be in the dental profession. Here are some reasons why dentistry rocks today.

Think about it. There are very few occupations where you have the opportunity to positively influence people’s lives on a daily basis. It could be something big like restoring a patient’s confidence by providing them with an ideal smile. Or it could be something seemingly small like just listening to a patient who desperately needs someone to listen to them. We literally have  the opportunity to connect with people and make a difference in their lives every day. Not many occupations provide that powerful opportunity!

Abundance or Scarcity…What is Your Choice?

Glass Half Full

“Behind ever successful business, someone once made a courageous decision.”

                                                –Peter Drucker

As I meet with Dentists throughout the country at Conferences, Seminars and CE Events I notice that the dental profession is dividing into the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’. The Dentists that fall into the haves column are thriving today, despite the challenges. Their practices are growing and these offices are helping more patients enjoy the benefits of good oral health. These Dentists are embracing the changing environment, taking much more CE than required, investing in new technology to better serve their patients, and are Bullish on the future of dentistry!

Life Changing Dentistry

HeadacheI recently returned from a speaking assignment at the ACE (Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics) Mastermind Conference held at a wonderful resort in the Florida Keys. The meeting was absolutely fantastic and I’d strongly recommend readers of this blog to get involved with this awesome group of people (http://www.acesthetics.com/).

One of the byproducts of this meeting was the opportunity to spend some time with my great friend, Dr. Mark W. Montgomery (http://www.markmontgomerydmd.com/). Mark and I spent many years together teaching at PAC Live and it was very exciting for me to hear about a project that Mark is very excited about these days. Mark is the Chief Dental Officer of TruDenta, a company that has developed a predictable method of diagnosing and treating patients suffering from chronic head and neck pain. Mark has an amazing understanding of dental occlusion and I quickly learned why Mark is so passionate about his work at TruDenta.

Here are some things I learned:
